PQRS Update-Possible Relief from 2017 and 2018 PQRS Penalties

CMS has announced that the agency will not penalize doctors in 2017 or 2018 who fail to meet the Physician Quality Reporting System's requirements "solely as a result of the impact of ICD-10 code updates on quality data reported."  Because of the fact that over 5,000 new ICD-10 codes were implemented in October 2016, CMS has been unable to process certain quality measures in the fourth quarter of this year. Because of this coding change, CMS has had difficulty in determining who has met PQRS's requirements this year. Doctors who did not successfully participate in PQRS would have incurred a 2 percent reduction in their Medicare reimbursement in 2017 and 2018 under PQRS for not meeting the program's requirements in 2015 and 2016.
