How to teach patients about nutrition

The role of nutrition in eye health is back in the spotlight with the release of the National Eye Institute-sponsored Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2). The time is right to remind patients that getting the proper nutrients every day helps protect their eyes and keeps them healthy.

"Six Essential Nutrients Your Eyes Need" (formerly "Recommended Nutrients for Healthy Eyes") is a convenient mini tear sheet that is free of charge upon request. It includes:

  • Foods rich in lutein plus zeaxanthin, omega-3, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc, all important for eye health.

  • Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for patients at higher risk for certain eye diseases.

This material (item NG-3 in the AOA Marketplace  online store) is made possible by a generous educational grant from Kemin Health.

In addition, the "Feast Your Eyes" 12-page brochure (item NG-1) provides an in-depth look at each of the six nutrients above. It covers why our eyes need each one in a visually appealing, easy-to-read format. This brochure is available for purchase.

You can find both resources by logging on to www.aoa.org/onlinestore and clicking on the "Nutrition" tab. AOA will be updating its materials based on the AREDS2 study-recommended formula.
