Answer: All are highlights from day two of the 117th Annual AOA Congress & 44th Annual AOSA Conference: Optometry's Meeting®. With around 5,000 registrants taking over Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Convention Center, the area was buzzing about all things optometry.
House of Delegates convenes
Mere blocks from the famous steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Jon Hymes, AOA interim executive director, reported to the AOA House of Delegates with a nod to "Rocky": "Every battle is important, and every result we achieve will play a role in determining the victories we will celebrate in the next year, so let's keep running up the steps together," Hymes said.
Hymes highlighted upward strides by the AOA in the past year, including:
- Release of crucial Clinical Resources Group tools, such as the AOA's first evidence-based clinical practice guideline for patients with diabetes and the traumatic brain injury (TBI) manual, among others;
- Re-launch of AOA Marketplace with a new look, feel and function;
- More than 6,000 paraoptometric staff enrolled as AOA associate members; and,
- Launch of new member communication streams with the AOA Focus news magazine, aoa.org/news daily web stories, and a new email and social media presence.
Campaign puts a scare in illegal lens market
Attendees also received a preview of a new public service announcement (PSA) campaign designed to curb use of illegal decorative contact lenses. The PSA features messages from eye care professionals and special effects makeup artists. It is an outgrowth of the work the AOA Contact Lens and Cornea Section (CLCS) has led with the FDA.
Ads reach public eyes
Jon Torrey, director of professional relations with Think About Your Eyes (TAYE), discussed the campaign's growing partnership with the AOA to raise awareness about vision health. Early results show the national campaign has made headway since its July 2013 launch. The first quarter of 2014 alone saw a 7.2 percent increase in total eye exams versus the same quarter of 2013.
ODs earn and learn
ODs are used to getting continuing education credits for sessions—but not necessarily cash. Today, attendees at AOA Branding Style "Product & Technology Exchange Sessions" received $50 each. They also learned about new products, new tech and the latest in knowledge about nutrition after AREDS2. AOA Branding Style sessions continue Friday and Saturday.
Hall of Fame adds three
The AOA honored three of the profession's brightest champions by inducting them into the National Optometry Hall of Fame. Arol R. Augsburger, O.D., of Chicago, Ill.; Ron Fair, O.D., of Brighton, Colo.; and Karla Zadnik, O.D., Ph.D., of Worthington, Ohio, joined esteemed colleagues who have made significant contributions to the profession. The National Optometry Hall of Fame is administered by Optometry Cares—The AOA Foundation.
Students face off in a battle of wits
War paint, team outfits, loud cheers—things got pretty serious at the Varilux® Optometry Student Bowl. Students at this annual trivia event flexed their mental muscles and showed their school pride to the delight of the crowd and the amusement of fans in person and on social media. This year, David Nguyen of Southern California College of Optometry was the winner and the school took home bragging rights.
