Optometrists run for funds, fun and awareness

As people prepare their year-end giving, the AOA is highlighting the many charitable and volunteer programs of Optometry Cares®—The AOA Foundation.

Next year, you can run or walk with colleagues while seeing Philadelphia's landmarks.

This week's entry is a healthy and helpful addition to Optometry's Meeting®. In 2013, 250 walkers and runners took to the streets of San Diego early Saturday morning, June 29, for a first-of-its-kind fundraising event.

The Optometry Cares® 5K Run/Walk successfully raised more than $20,000 and generated awareness of the many programs supported by the foundation, including InfantSEE® and Optometry's Fund for Disaster Relief. The event was held with support from The Vision Council Low Vision Division, Luxottica and Essilor.

How to get involved

There's good news for ODs who couldn't run or walk in 2013: the 5K will happen again at Optometry's MeetingTM 2014 in Philadelphia. Next year, you can run or walk with colleagues while seeing landmarks such as the famous "Rocky" steps at the Philadelphia Art Museum.

How you can help:

  • Save the date for the Second-Annual 5K Run/Walk on June 28, 2014.
  • Watch for information when Optometry's Meeting® registration opens in February 2014, and sign up early. The event sold out in 2013.
  • Even if you can't participate, support Optometry Cares® by giving online.
