VISION USA’s volunteers serve the underserved
As people prepare their year-end giving, the AOA is highlighting the many charitable and volunteer programs of Optometry Cares®—The AOA Foundation.
VISION USA's numbers highlight both the need and the dedicated volunteers who step up to meet it.
Volunteers In Service In Our Nation (VISION USA) is one such program. VISION USA provides basic eye health and vision services at no cost for low-income, uninsured individuals and their families.
VISION USA's numbers highlight both the need and the dedicated volunteers who step up to meet it. In 2013 alone, VISION USA received more than 6,000 applications for assistance from communities across the country. In turn, more than 3,000 optometrists volunteered their services through the program.
In addition, Optometry Cares® received a donation from the Alcon Foundation to expand the program. This donation allowed VISION USA to assist low-income, uninsured students attending Tarrant County Community College in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metropolitan area. This pilot project increased their access to basic eye health and vision services free of charge—including needed eyewear.
