Accreditation Council on Optometric Education
at the ACOE Annual Meeting
June 27-30, 2007

At its June 27-30, 2007 Annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education took the following actions:

NOTE: The date behind the names of the programs below is the next currently scheduled full evaluation visit.

  1. Preaccreditation Actions
    The following program was granted candidacy pending status following a unanimous mail ballot:
    • Orlando VAMC, Residency in Hospital Based Optometry, which is affiliated with Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry (2008);

  2. Initial Accreditation
    • Department of Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System La Jolla Medical Center, Residency in Primary Eye Care, which is affiliated with the Southern California College of Optometry (2014);
    • Eye Centers of Florida, Residency in Ocular Disease, which is affiliated with Southern College of Optometry (2014);
    • John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center Health Care System, Residency in Primary Care and Ocular Disease, which is affiliated with Ferris State University Michigan College of Optometry (2014);

  3. Continuing Accreditation
    Classification of “Accredited” continued following a full evaluation visit:
    • Keller Army Community Hospital, Residency in Family Practice Optometry, which is affiliated with State University of New York, State College of Optometry (2014);
    • University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Optometry, Residency in Pediatric Optometry (2014);
    • University of California, Berkeley, School of Optometry, Optometry Residency Program (2014);
    • University of California, Berkeley, School of Optometry, Professional Optometric Degree Program (2015);
    • Wilkes-Barre Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Residency in Ocular Disease, which is affiliated with Pennsylvania College of Optometry (2014);
    • Veterans Affairs Medical Center Wilmington Delaware, Residency in Ocular Disease, which is affiliated with Pennsylvania College of Optometry (2014);

  4. Reconsideration of Accreditation Denial
    Classification of “Accredited with Conditions”* granted following reconsideration of previous decision to deny accreditation:
    • Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Residency in Primary Care Optometry, which is affiliated with Pennsylvania College of Optometry (2008);
    * A decision to grant the category of accredited with conditions is not final until the ACOE appeals process has been exhausted, or until 30 days from notification of the action to grant accredited with conditions.

  5. Withdrawal of accreditation by ACOE
    • None

  6. Voluntary withdrawal of accreditation
    • None

During a June 4, 2007 teleconference, the ACOE took the following action:

Classification of “Accredited” reinstated following reconsideration of previous decision to withdraw accreditation:

  • Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Residency in Primary Eye Care – Department of Veterans Affairs, which is affiliated with Pacific University College of Optometry (2012).
