Maintain Your Certification

Purpose of Renewal

The Commission on Paraoptometric Certification (CPC) renewal program ensures certified paraoptometrics remain current in optometric assisting skills and knowledge. The purpose of recertification is to ensure that certified paraoptometrics maintain their competence to practice by increasing their knowledge, honing their skills, encouraging interaction with peers and meeting professional standards.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Option 1: Those who hold a designation of CPOTM, CPOATM or CPOTTM must earn a minimum of 18 hours in continuing education every three years and provide proof of this CE credit to the CPC by November 1 of their renewal year. All CE credit hours submitted for recertification must have been attained prior to the recertification deadline date. Renewal dates are based on the year in which they attained their current certification level or the year in which they most recently renewed their current certification status. The renewal year may be found in the lower left corner on the current certificate.

Those who hold a designation of CPOCTM must earn a minimum of 9 hours in continuing education every three years and provide proof of this CE credit to the CPC by May 31 of their renewal year. All CE credit hours submitted for recertification must have been attained prior to the recertification deadline date. Renewal dates are based on the year in which they attained their current certification level or the year in which they most recently renewed their current certification status. The renewal year may be found in the lower left corner on the current certificate.

Option 2: In lieu of providing proof of required CE hours, certified paraoptometrics may opt to recertify by applying, paying for, and successfully passing the examination of the next higher level of certification prior to the renewal date for their current designation.

Failure to meet one of these requirements will result in loss of CPC designation. Need continuing education credit? View our listing of available continuing education credit opportunities, or view our Education and Product Catalog.
