Continuing education (CE) allows the Paraoptometric to stay current within the eye care field and is especially important in the study of direct patient care and office competency. Additionally, certified paraoptometrics must obtain hours of CE credit from approved education providers to maintain certification designation. Refer to Maintain Your Certification to view the required number of hours.
Our online CE opportunities are accessible only for AOA-member paraoptometrics. Earning a certification through the CPC does not automatically initiate a membership in AOA. Creating an account through the "create an account" link on the AOA website will not initiate or connect to a membership. If you are experiencing difficulty accessing the online CE opportunities please be sure your AOA-member OD has enrolled you for membership (the OD must use his/her login to enroll staff). If your doctor has enrolled you and you do not remember your login information, try using your ID# as your username and your last name (case-sensitive) or your 6-digit birthdate (mmddyy) as your password. If you are still unable to log in please contact PRC@aoa.org for assistance.
If you are renewing your CPO, CPOA or CPOT certification this year, proof of 18 earned credits and your $95 renewal payment will be due to the CPC by November 1. All quizzes submitted by October 1 will be graded and CE verification forms will be emailed to the paraoptometric by October 15 so that the November 1 renewal deadline can be met. Please note that we cannot guarantee that quizzes submitted after October 1 will be processed in time for you to meet the November 1 deadline.
The Paraoptometric Resource Center (PRC) provides a variety of continuing education resources. Not all education opportunities are for certification requirements, but serve as resources for those optometric staff new to the field or for those experienced staff interested in keeping up with changes in optometry.
The PRC offers the Paraoptometric Skill Builder® series for beginners, intermediate and advanced optometric staff, as well as webinars, articles, and certificate programs. Many resources are offered online for the individual or can be purchased on CD for use by an optometric practice.
Opportunities for six hours of free CE credit are offered each year to members. To receive credit, those interested may read the available articles and submit the completed exam online. Credit will be given to those who successfully pass the exam.
If you cannot access our online CE opportunities, please contact PRC@aoa.org or call 1.800.365.2219, ext. 4108.
