Practicing Optometrists & their Patients



The purpose of this report is to provide descriptive statistics on characteristics of optometrists practicing in the United States in 2011. Information is also provided on characteristics of patients and optometrists' participation in third party plans and managed care services. Data on patients was not obtained from a survey of patients, but rather from optometrists' estimates of the characteristics of the patients in their practice.

Contents of these reports include:

  • Optometrist age, years in practice, gender, U.S. Census Region
  • Practice size
  • Patient demographics
  • Insurance coverage
  • Number of active patients per practice
  • Services provided to managed care patients
  • Insurance plan participation
  • Reduced fees for services

  • Executive Summary - This free publication is available for immediate download in PDF format and provides an overall summary of key results from the 2012 survey.

  • Optometry Report - This 25-page publication presents results from the 2012 survey in narrative format with the support of 25 figures and tables to present important findings. This report may be purchased through the AOA Online Store, and is available in PDF format (Item RA3-O2D), on CD (Item RA3-O2C), or Print (Item RA3-O2P).

  • Detailed Analysis Report -  This 84-page detailed comprehensive report employs limited narrative, and includes tabulations and graphics for further statistical analysis. Includes available trending data from previous surveys through 2012. Through the use of 199 figures and tables, this report utilizes cross tabulation to enable the user to  monitor trends in the optometric profession specific to his or her practice characteristics, including employment situation, gender, years in practice, age, and U.S. Census Region. This report may be purchased through the AOA Online Store, and is availabe in PDF format (Item RA3-D2D), on CD (Item RA3-D2C), or Print (Item RA3-D2P).
