AOA Seal of Acceptance

Seal of Acceptance for Ultraviolet Absorbers/Blockers

The American Optometric Association (AOA) has established a program to provide evaluation and recognition of quality ultraviolet absorbers and blockers. Products that meet the minimum specifications established by the AOA Commission on Ophthalmic Standards are allowed to use the AOA Seal of Acceptance in product labeling and marketing.

Category Requirements

To be Accepted, the product sample must not transmit more than

  • 1% UVB (290 to 315 nm) or UVA (315 to 380nm),
  • 0.2(τv) [where τv is the luminous transmittance] short wavelength VIS (380 to 400nm)

(In photosensitive lenses, τv is defined as the luminous transmittance when lightened, but transmittance requirements apply to both the lightened and darkened state.)
