Masking Residual Cylinder using Aberrational Correcting Hydrogel Lenses

Title

Masking Residual Cylinder using Aberrational Correcting Hydrogel Lenses

Authors

Angela J. Zook, O.D., Ken Daniels, O.D.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine if hydrogel soft lenses can mask residual astigmatism. It was used to determine if the Ultravision Choice AB lens and the CSI daily wear lens were comparable to each other.

Method

Eighteen patients participated in a one time non-dispensing study, using the manifest spherical correction lens, that measured high/low contrast visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, corneal topography and subjective cylindrical over-refraction.

Results

There was no statistically significant correction of residual astigmatism with the Choice AB lens or the CSI daily wear lens. There was no statistically significant difference in the measure of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity with the Choice AB or the CSI daily wear lens.

Conclusion

Soft hydrogel contact lenses do not mask residual cylinder. The Ultravision Choice AB lens performs as well as the CSI daily wear contact lens.
