Carriers are taking bigger roles in setting Medicare policy. Federal law recognizes optometrists as physicians under the Medicare program. State law determines optometric scope of practice. However, carrier medical directors are increasingly exercising authority to set policy on Medicare payment – including policy to deny payment to optometrists for some services. Carrier Advisory Committee representatives are optometry’s voice at CAC meetings.
