American Optometric Association Issues Consumer Health Alert and Guidance for Contaminated Eye Drops

Alexandria, Virginia – April 6, 2023 – The American Optometric Association (AOA) is issuing an alert to consumers to stop using EzriCare™ and Delsam Pharma's Artificial Tears products by Global Pharma Healthcare. These eye drops have been recalled after they were linked to potential bacterial contamination. Using contaminated artificial tears increases risk of eye infections that could result in blindness or death. Patients that have used these products or experience any new and/or prolonged irritation in their eyes should visit AOA.org to book an appointment with an AOA doctor of optometry.

“As always, doctors of optometry are ready to serve the public and assist with patient’s concerns,” said Dr. Ronald L. Benner, AOA President. “Regardless if an individual experiencing obvious symptoms, anyone who has used these products should alert their local doctor of optometry so they may assess the front surface of their eye for any problems during a comprehensive eye exam.”

It’s important to note that eye drops are safe when manufactured and used properly. When talking with a doctor of optometry, it’s important to share any prescribed and over-the-counter medications currently in use and ask for their professional opinion. This can also help ensure that an appropriate treatment plan is in place.

Health care professionals, as well as patients, are encouraged to report any adverse events or quality problems with any medicine to the Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
