Description:

The relatively new and growing application of genetic testing and gene therapy within the realm of eye care has brought to the forefront numerous ethical and legal considerations.  In this course we will discuss ethical considerations relating to genetic testing, primarily data privacy and confidentiality. We will also look at several clinical scenarios that bring up ethical questions. We will speculate on future ethical dilemmas, as researchers are currently using CRISPR technology to develop new gene editing techniques.  Unfortunately, not all these ethical questions have clear answers. To help guide decision making, current recommendations by the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Task Force on Genetic Testing and the American Medical Association will be examined.  Lastly, we will cover current laws that regulate genetic discrimination in the United States.
