Description:

Providers continue to find it difficult and challenging to bill and code low vision rehabilitative services. Low vision services are time intensive and require a thorough knowledge of appropriate and accurate coding. Medicare/CMS has finalized the first major change for outpatient office billing and coding since the 1990's. Significant changes in 'Evaluation and Management (E&M)' coding started in January 2021. A major goal of this change is to reduce the administrative burden placed on providers and improve the payment accuracy for 'Evaluation and Management' visits in the outpatient setting.  Optometrists will have the choice of coding based upon 'time' or 'medical decision making.' This course will review the ICD/CPT codes that providers of low vision rehabilitative services use in their practices. Case examples of the new codes will be presented. Optometrists will learn the rules and the advantages and disadvantages between coding based on 'Time' or 'MDM.'   In order to survive audits, guidelines for the proper documentation of medical records will be discussed.
