Description:

Optometrists are referring a large number of the over four million cataract surgeries performed in the US per year, but are co-managing the post-operative care in a minority of cases. Collaborative care for the cataract surgery patient benefits the patients, allows the surgical team to provide surgery for more patients, and finally maintains continuity of care between the patient and optometrist. With the ever-changing landscape in cataract comorbidities, surgical techniques and protocols, intraocular lenses, and post-operative care, co-management can be anxiety inducing. This lecture aims to confirm that any optometrist who wants to co-manage patients can gain proficiency in five steps. Diagnosis with comorbidities, making a surgical referral, day of surgery, post-operative schedules and surprises, and managing the unhappy patient will all be discussed in a rapid-fire interactive lecture format.
