SD-Alzheimer's and Dementia Complicate Everything
Description:
Alzheimer's and dementia patients have visual needs that the optometrist can address in the office, long term care facilities and homes. An overview of the different types of dementia, prevalence and progressive stages of impairment will be completed. This course will review age related, chronic and acute visual conditions and detail effective management strategies for patients that may not be able to cooperate or communicate with ocular examination due to mild, moderate or severe cognitive impairment.Optometric patient population is expanding to include many patients with mild, moderate and severe cognitive impairment.Optometric care is delivered to these patients in multiple settings including primary care office, long term care facilities, inpatient hospital, rehabilitation hospital and private home settings.Common diagnoses and treatment plans, pearls for examination and management of these elderly patients will be discussed.Ideas for removing barriers to eye care for improved patient outcomes will be presented.
