Description:

Optometrists excel at treatment of uveitis.  Uveitis often has an underlying systemic cause.  Determining systemic causes of uveitis requires ordering proper blood testing and radiological imaging as indicated.  From this testing, a systemic cause can be determined.  When an optometrist determines a systemic cause, the patient may benefit from a team approach to care, involving primary care, hematology, rheumatology, or other health care providers. This unique position bridges primary care and specialty systemic care for our patients.  Optometrists are in the best position to order, assimilate and share test findings which can shape further care for uveitis patients.  This can enhance overall health beyond just the eyes and for the whole body.
