Description:

Sickle cell disease is a genetic hematological condition with multi-system manifestations. Various genotypes of the condition exist, each with their own risk of ocular manifestations. Sickle cell retinopathy, one of the more common ocular manifestations of sickle cell disease, can be potentially blinding and must be appropriately screened for, detected, and treated when necessary. Though there are no universally adopted preferred practice guidelines for the optometric/ophthalmic management of sickle cell retinopathy this course will provide attendees a foundation on sickle cell disease, the ocular manifestations of sickle cell disease, and the appropriate management of these patients. Case images will be presented and a discussion of when/who to refer will be included.
