Description:

The medical and surgical management of diabetic retinopathy is rapidly evolving, with a trend towards earlier treatment and prevention of vision threatening complications. Concurrently, imaging technology is ever advancing, particularly with the advent and widespread availability of OCT angiography and wide-field fundus photography. This course will cover both fundamental and advanced concepts of contemporary diabetic retinopathy care, with an emphasis on recent diagnostic and management developments. Real-world clinical applications of multi-modal imaging technology will be explored, including how it can enhance the optometrist's ability to detect early pathology and more accurately stage the disease.  A case-based format will be employed to discuss the standard of care management for various retinopathy stages with an emphasis on the utility of imaging and the optometrist's role in diabetic retinopathy management, including when to refer.
