TD-Sensitivity Training; A Chronicle of Neurotrophic Keratitis (NK) Management

With the increased understanding of the ocular surface and the expanded research revealing more and more about the lacrimal functional unit, neurosensory abnormalities have recently been recognized as a major player in corneal and other ocular surface pathologies.  Neurotrophic Keratitis is defined as a degenerative disease characterized by corneal sensitivity reduction, spontaneous epithelium breakdown, and impairment of corneal healing.  It has been fraught with poor treatment options for many years however there are becoming more options for practitioners to help address the needs of these patients.  This discussion looks to address the knowledge gap in NK, especially regarding the recognition of the early causes and manifestations of this disease. Hopefully, with early intervention optometry can prevent sight threatening, end stage disease.  Case based diagnostic processes, as well as treatment options and algorithms will be a focus of the discussion.
