Optometrist of the Year Award

Peter M. Agnone

Peter M. Agnone, O.D., of Michigan, is the 2014 Optometrist of the Year. Dr. Agnone is a graduate of the Illinois College of Optometry and currently serves on the AOA Executive Third Party Committee.

Dr. Agnone is an active member in the Michigan Optometric Association (MOA), having served on the MOA Board of Trustees from 1995 to 2004, and as president in 2003. He also has served on numerous MOA task forces and committees, including the MOA Managed Care Division: Third Party Committee.

Dr. Agnone has advocated for the profession extensively, helping to secure legislation that broadened optometry's scope of practice in Michigan, including legislation allowing therapeutically-certified optometrists to treat glaucoma with topical drugs. He also has helped negotiate and expand Medicare to include levels 4 and 5 for Michigan optometrists, as well as negotiated with state Medicaid leaders to add Michigan optometrists to their medical provider panels.

In recognition of his expertise and dedication to the profession, Dr. Agnone was appointed by Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to serve on the Michigan State Board of Optometry from 2008 to 2012.

Dr. Agnone developed and executed a plan for success in third party advocacy, serving as the backbone of the reThink Eyecare campaign. Upon learning that many auto industry employees and retirees lacked access to optometrists for medical eye care, he engaged in discussion with United Auto Workers and automotive industry companies to emphasize the important role optometrists serve. Approximately 800,000 patients can now see optometrists for all services provided by the profession.

Actively involved in his community, Dr. Agnone has volunteered his time at his community's local elementary schools, teaching children about the eye's anatomy. He also lectures to teachers on how to help recognize common eye and vision problems. Dr. Agnone has been a guest speaker about eye and vision care at the Grand Blanc Public Schools on several occasions.
