The American Optometric Association Paraoptometric of the Year Award recognizes a deserving individual paraoptometric who has made outstanding contributions to the profession of optometry, patients and the public.

A paraoptometric is one who works under the direct supervision of a licensed doctor of optometry, collects patient data, administers routine and technical tests of patient’s visual capabilities, and assists in office management. A paraoptometric may assist the doctor  in providing patient care, examination and treatment services, including, but not limited to, contact lenses, low vision, vision therapy, ophthalmic dispensing, and office management.

Rules

  • The candidate must be employed by an AOA member doctor and enrolled as an AOA associate member through their doctor’s AOA membership.
  • Current AOA Paraoptometric Resource Center committee members are not eligible for nomination.
  • Paraoptometrics who serve on the PRC Awards and Recognition work group may not nominate a candidate for this award.
  • The nomination must be submitted using this electronic form prior to the deadline.

The nomination must be submitted:

  • No later than Feb. 18 by one of the following:
    • A state, regional or local paraoptometric or optometric organization.
    • An AOA member doctor.
    • An AOA paraoptometric associate member

Nomination submissions must include:

  • At least one letter of recommendation, but additional letters will be accepted.
  • Ancillary articles and documentation regarding professional service.
