Paraoptometric of the Year Award

Roberta Beers Roberta Beers, CPOT, of Pennsylvania, is the 2014 Paraoptometric of the Year. She has been employed as an optometric assistant in Erie, Pa., for the past 22 years.

Beers has a long history with the Pennsylvania Paraoptometric Association (PPA), beginning her service as treasurer in 1988. She went on to serve as vice-president of education, president-elect, and as president in 2000. Beers currently serves as the vice-president of communications and public relations for the PPA.

Beers received the Pennsylvania Paraoptometric of the Year award in 1997 and again in 2012. She also co-authored the third edition of the Pennsylvania Paraoptometric Manual, which has sold in the United States, Canada and New Zealand.

She has composed several educational articles, including a piece for the AOA's Paraoptometric Resource Center newsletter and another for an educational supplement of the Journal of the AOA.

Beers is known for emphasizing the value of the profession to the public. She has volunteered her time promoting the InfantSEE® program at health fairs and local schools; demonstrated her compassion and dispensing skills by visiting local retirement homes, highlighting the importance of comprehensive eye exams; and volunteered with Special Olympics Opening Eyes, as well as Northwestern Pennsylvania Opening Eyes, for which she has served as coordinator.  

Beers is applauded for going above and beyond in serving patients and ensuring they receive the best possible care, helping the practice run smoothly and efficiently, and encouraging her colleagues to be the best they can for their profession. She is also known for her compassion—even delivering contact lenses to patients who were unable to make it into the office. Her colleagues praise her enthusiasm for paraoptometry and promoting new ideas to encourage the PPA to promote and provide education for certification on the national level.
