There has never been a more important time for doctors of optometry and optometry students to be on Capitol Hill than 2018.

Doctors, students and patients are facing an all-out assault from abusive health and vision plans, unscrupulous online contact lens resellers and peddlers of unproven online vision tests, and turf-obsessed elements of organized medicine and ophthalmology.

Very simply, if optometry does not speak out in force right now, we risk allowing these anti-optometry forces to decide the fate of the profession and dictate how doctors of optometry practice and provide care for patients.

This year, with AOA on Capitol Hill 2018 being held less than a mile from the U.S. Capitol, optometry has exactly the opportunity we need to ensure that a record number of doctors of optometry and optometry students are taking the profession's message about quality care and expanded patient access directly to Congress.

To help us take full advantage of this great opportunity, please consider making plans today to participate in AOA on Capitol Hill 2018, optometry's largest annual advocacy event (formerly known as the AOA Congressional Advocacy Conference) and the centerpiece of the profession's national lobbying efforts.

AOA on Capitol Hill 2018 aims to build upon the successful and record-breaking AOA on Capitol Hill 2017 and AOA+.

Getting Started:
It all starts with registering to attend AOA on Capitol Hill 2018. Participation is open to all advocacy-minded doctors and students and the event is shaped around providing time for our attendees, in close coordination with their state associations, to pre-arrange and participate in meetings with U.S. senators and House members. Contact your state association and see how you can help to prepare for your visit to D.C. and your state's meetings.  If you have any questions or problems regarding registration, please contact Tess Milliorn at 703.837.1345 or and she'll be happy to help you!

Our Priorities:
At a moment when everything in the health care policy landscape is changing, the AOA is working to build on past victories-each made possible by the grassroots efforts of AOA doctors and students-and to ensure our profession's priorities are heard loud and clear on Capitol Hill and across Washington, D.C.:

Scheduling Capitol Hill Appointments:
Contact your state association to coordinate, and then use the AOA Meeting Request Letter to schedule your Capitol Hill meetings. In addition, state associations and federal keyperson doctors also can arrange special fundraising dinners and receptions with pro-optometry leaders in Congress. AOA-PAC stands ready to support these efforts. Contact Matt Willette ( for more information.
