Fred Farias, III, O.D., FAAO, was elected to the American Optometric Association (AOA) Board of Trustees at the 120th Annual AOA Congress & 47th Annual AOSA Conference: Optometry's Meeting® in June 2017.

Dr. Farias serves as liaison to the Commission on Ophthalmic Standards and the Ethics and Values Committee.  He also serves as the affiliate liaison to the states of Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, the Ohio State University, College of Optometry and Pennsylvania College of Optometry.  Dr. Farias' past board work includes serving as liaison to Ethics and Values Committee, Multi-Disciplinary Advisory Team, Paraoptometric Resource Center Committee, Research and Information Resource Team and the Vision Rehabilitation Committee.

Dr. Farias most recently served on the Federal Legislative Action Keyperson Committee, and as a member of the VISION USA Committee, and has been an AOA Keyperson for more than 20 years. He is a past president of the Texas Optometric Association (TOA), having served on their Executive Committee, twice, most recently from 2012 to 2015. He also has served as an AOA Congressional Delegate for Texas, and served as president of the Rio Grande Valley Optometric Association.

Serving on the Texas State Board of Optometry between 2001 and 2007, Dr. Farias also has received gubernatorial appointments to state committees and boards. He also serves as Vice Chairman of The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Dr. Farias has been awarded the 2016 AOA Optometrist of the Year, 1991 AOA Optometric Recognition Award, and numerous TOA recognitions, including Optometrist of the Year, Young Optometrist of the Year and Presidents Award, and was awarded the 2017 Southern College of Optometry Lifetime Achievement Award.

A graduate of Southern College of Optometry, Dr. Farias is active in his community, as well as his alma mater, University of Texas.

Dr. Farias is currently in private practice in McAllen, Texas.
