Your sight is more than your window to the world – it’s a gift that makes all the difference in the quality of your life. It affects the way you live, work and play. Yet, many people may take vision for granted.

We all know the importance of an annual physical to ensure our health. But what about your eyes? Sure, you may think of this as necessary only if you wear glasses or contacts, or perhaps have a problem with your vision. Think again, though, because getting a comprehensive eye exam every year is just as important to your health as an annual physical.

But don’t confuse a comprehensive eye exam with a vision screening. You may remember this from your first days in school or the simple eye test that you take when you renew your driver’s license. Such simple vision screenings only identify risks for vision problems or may place certain restrictions on your driving.

Patient receiving an eye examUnfortunately, millions of Americans face serious vision issues – from blindness to visual impairment. The challenges associated with reduced vision include social isolation and depression, an increased risk of falls and accidents, and sometimes a disability (vision disability is one of the Top 10 disabilities of those 18 years or older).

Often, vision issues are preventable and the best way to preserve eye health and vision is by visiting a doctor of optometry at least once a year for a comprehensive eye exam. A comprehensive eye exam is the best way to uncover any potential problems and is the only  way to visualize the blood vessels behind your eyes without an x-ray, CT scan, or invasive surgery.

Champion Your Eye Health

More than 11 million Americans would improve their vision simply through corrective eyewear. And an early diagnosis and treatment plan can better ensure that your eyes remain healthy, even to the point of preventing vision loss if such problems persist.
