SGRC Regional Advocacy Meetings

Atlanta, Georgia

Building on the overwhelming success of last year's inaugural regional advocacy meetings, the AOA State Government Relations Committee (SGRC) once again will host a series of advocacy meetings to collaborate with and work to maximize affiliates' advocacy strategies with firsthand input from seasoned veterans.

With all new content and conversations planned, the 2023 AOA SGRC Regional Advocacy Meetings will build on the foundational elements of 2022 meetings and dive deeper into specific tactics used by optometry's advocates to successfully navigate the legislative landscape. Hear from those advocates who have found success with a number of issues affecting our profession. Panelists will share what roadblocks they experienced and strategies to navigate around those obstacles. Among the pertinent issues up for discussion at these meetings include the emergence of physician "title" bills and other offensive plays utilized by opponents to derail optometry's advancements.

AOA SGRC Regional Advocacy Meeting Eastern

Eastern region states include: Alabama, Connecticut, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia.

Eye care is the third-most requested health service by veterans at the VA—and doctors of optometry provide the majority of that care. Yet, as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) considers new national standards of practice for more than 50 health professions at its facilities, optometrists are making a winning case for expanding their role at an understaffed VA and are galvanizing against baseless attacks from organized medicine, ophthalmology and a few unbending legislators.
