Regulatory and Coding

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

HIPAA requires covered entities and their business associates to protect the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI). It also provides patients with rights to their PHI. HIPAA's Privacy Rule restricts the use and disclosure of individual's PHI. The Security Rule requires administrative, technical and physical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of electronic PHI.

Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act (FCLCA)

With a growing number of websites and small retailers continuing to illegally offer decorative, non-corrective contact lenses for sale without prescription, doctors of optometry should be diligent in reporting all adverse events associated with such lenses.

Medicare & Insurance

The AOA provides information and resources to assist members in staying abreast of the numerous Medicare rules and regulations. The AOA also advocates directly with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding issues of concern to the optometric profession.

Medical Records and Coding

This webpage provides AOA members with essential guidance, online tools and educational content to master accurate medical recordkeeping, documentation and coding (ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS). Members can access exclusive resources like the digital Codes for Optometry, the AOA Coding Today database, on-demand webinars or direct support from AOA Coding Experts to ensure compliance and accurate reimbursement.
