Hindsight Journal
Hindsight: The Journal of Optometry History is the quarterly publication of The Optometric Historical Society, a program of Optometry Cares®—The AOA Foundation.
About the Journal
The Optometric Historical Society (OHS) has been publishing a quarterly newsletter or journal since 1970. Originally titled Newsletter of the Optometric Historical Society (1970-1991, Volumes 1-22) and Hindsight: Newsletter of the Optometric Historical Society (1992-1996 Volumes 23-27), the journal began publication under the title Hindsight: Journal of Optometry History in 2007 (Volume 38, Number 1). In 2016, the OHS launched the electronic edition of Hindsight available for members only.
Past and frequent contributors to Hindsight have written several vignettes exploring historical topics and pivotal events in the history of the profession and the association. These pieces provide examples of the scholarship and research regularly featured in the journal. Please feel free to explore these topics using the links below. The Optometric Historical Society
In the fall of 1969, AOA Past-President Henry W. Hofstetter, O.D., Ph.D., and Librarian Maria Dablemont spearheaded the formation of the Optometric Historical Society (OHS) to protect and promote the historical legacy of the profession of optometry. Through its support of The Archives & Museum of Optometry, the OHS encourages the collection, preservation and exhibition of artifacts and archival material that document the history of the profession, practice and science of optometry and the optical industry. The OHS also organizes speaking engagements for its annual Blast from the Past event held in conjunction with AOA’s Optometry’s Meeting® and other programming for the benefit and education of doctors of optometry. The OHS and The Archives & Museum of Optometry are part of the Heritage Services program under Optometry Cares®—The AOA Foundation. All donations to the program are tax deductible.
Florida optometrists quash effort—again—to pass ‘not-a-doctor’ bill
“Not-a-doctor” bills have resurfaced again during this legislative session, after state affiliates and the AOA defeated similar pushes across the country in 2023. In Florida, on the last day of the legislative session, a bill there to limit the use of specific medical titles failed.
