Called the “City of Lakes” for its abundant, picturesque landscape with 20+ lakes within city limits, Minneapolis is the perfect blend of natural beauty and urban sophistication. Beyond the lakes and mighty Mississippi river are 200 miles of walking, biking and hiking trails, all within city limits, that lead you to a vibrant arts and music scene, world-class shopping and museums, award-winning restaurants and more. It’s no wonder Minneapolis has been named the happiest city in the United States!

Looking to take your networking outside of the convention center and experience this happy city? Members of the Minnesota Optometric Association have got you covered. Here are their recommendations of where to dine, relax and take in the Optometry’s Meeting host city.

EAT & DRINK

Spoon and Stable

“If you enjoy trying cuisine from James Beard award-winning chefs, you have to experience Spoon and Stable in the North Loop. It’s got everything you want for a fine dining experience from the ambience, the food and the drink. It’s a favorite spot of athletes and celebrities alike. I probably would eat there once a week if I could!” -Lauren Haverly, O.D.

The Market at Malcolm Yards

“The Market at Malcolm Yards is a popular food hall showcasing a diverse array of culinary vendors. Beyond the market, the area features attractions like the O’Shaughnessy Distillery and proximity to Surly Brewing, creating a hub for food, drink and social gathering. The location has a modern industrial feel.” -Andrew Mackner, O.D.

Colita

“A unique blend of Mexican flavors with a modern, smoked twist. Don’t miss the cacio e pepe and churros paired with their excellent craft cocktails.” -Tommy Elton, O.D.

Hewing Rooftop

“If you prefer a cocktail, check out the Hewing Hotel rooftop for an excellent view of the city skyline. Other great spots for a cocktail include Billy After Dark, Flora Room, Parlour and Miaou Miaou.” -Andrew Mackner, O.D.

LISTEN

First Avenue

“Nothing is more iconic in downtown Minneapolis than First Avenue. Take your picture in front of all the stars that grace the building’s exterior or the Prince mural across the street. Prince frequented the popular music venue back in the day, but it has hosted many other incredible artists since then. You can’t go wrong with any live music at First Avenue.” -Lauren Haverly, O.D.

Berlin

“Berlin is a great jazz bar serving appetizers and drinks with live music nightly.” -Andrew Mackner, O.D.

EXPLORE

Minnesota’s Great River Road

“Walk, run or bike the Minneapolis river road, particularly sections like the East and West River Parkways. These routes trace the Mississippi River’s course, providing stunning views of the water, the city skyline and the surrounding natural beauty.” -Andrew Mackner, O.D.

Minneapolis Institute of Art

“A world-class museum with an incredible collection, from ancient artifacts to modern masterpieces.” -Tommy Elton, O.D.

Target Field

“Target Field is one of my favorite places to visit in Minneapolis. You can’t beat hearing the crack of the bat on a beautiful Minnesota summer day with good friends. There isn’t a bad seat in the house—even standing room gives you interesting vantage points. Come to the ballpark hungry: they’ve got incredible food options waiting for you. Just don’t wear any Wisconsin jerseys!” -Lauren Haverly, O.D.

Minnehaha Falls

“Visit this stunning waterfall in Minnehaha Park, one of the city’s most iconic natural attractions.” -Tommy Elton, O.D.

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

“The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is where you will find the iconic ‘Spoonbridge and Cherry.’ Visitors wander through meticulously landscaped grounds, encountering visually striking works of contemporary art.” -Andrew Mackner, O.D.

Lake Minnetonka

“Just a short drive from the city, this stunning lake is one of Minnesota’s most sought-after destinations. Visit Wayzata or Excelsior for charming lakeside shopping and dining or take a charter cruise to fully experience the beauty of the area from the water.” -Tommy Elton, O.D.

FESTIVAL

Twin Cities Pride – June 27-29

“Minneapolis is proud to host Twin Cities Pride, one of the largest LGBTQ+ celebrations in the Midwest. If you’re in town during Optometry’s Meeting, be sure to check out these events.” -Tommy Elton, O.D.

  • Pride Festival in Loring Park – Taking place all weekend, this vibrant festival features live music, food vendors, community booths, and entertainment.
  • Pride Parade – The annual Pride Parade marches through downtown Minneapolis on Sunday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., bringing together a diverse and colorful  celebration of love, equality and inclusivity.
