Day in the life: Optometry’s Meeting®

Make the most of all Optometry's Meeting® has to offer with a bit of advanced planning before heading to Seattle, Washington, June 24-28. Take a look at an optometrist's sample schedule to get an idea for how you can maximize your own schedule for optometry's premiere event.

Thursday, June 25

  • 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
    Choose from one of two free symposia with breakfast. Enjoy breakfast courtesy of industry supporters with either “Alcon Allergy Update, PAZEO™,” or “Zylet–Treatment of Ocular Inflammatory Conditions with Concomitant Risk of Bacterial Infection” from Bausch + Lomb.

  • 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.*
    Attend the AOA House of Delegates. Get to the AOA House of Delegates early to witness the traditional fanfare of the opening session, including the parade of flags from each of the affiliate associations. See your delegation in action, helping to lead the advancement of optometry in the 118th AOA Congress.

  • 10:00 – 12:00 p.m.
    Attend continuing education (CE). Consult the CE schedule to find in-depth, diverse educational programming and gain the practice pearls you need to stay advanced and competitive in the industry.

  • 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
    Choose from one of three free symposia with lunch. Enjoy lunch courtesy of industry supporters with “Good and Bad Blue Light–Selective Filtration with Crizal® Prevencia™ No-Glare Lenses” from Essilor; “Open-angle Glaucoma: Managing IOP in Clinical Practice” from Allergan; or “Work Smarter, Not Harder: Use of AIR OPTIX® COLORS Color Studio and Social Media to Drive Your Color Lens Practice” from Alcon.

  • 3:00 – 3:45 p.m.*
    Blast from the Past (Reminisce-In). Stop in at The Optometric Historical Society’s annual Blast from the Past event to hear a presentation on “The Early Years of Optometry in the Indian Health Service,” from Lester Caplan, O.D., the first optometric consultant to the Director of the Indian Health Service.

  • 3:45 – 4:00 p.m.*
    “Appy" Hour in AOA Central. Take that smartphone or tablet out of your satchel and put it to work with some of the newest apps and tools you can use in practice, or simply in daily life. Network with other optometry techies to share and find resources to improve productivity.

  • 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.*
    Exhibit Hall grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony. Just steps away from AOA Central, join friends and colleagues as the AOA Board of Trustees opens the Exhibit Hall. Take a pass through to see all the latest and greatest, and make a note of which vendors you’ll be returning to in the morning.

  • 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
    Dinner at Seattle Center. Just a mile away from the Washington State Convention Center, this 74-acre campus not only includes restaurants and shops, but also popular attractions, including the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass, EMP Museum and the Pacific Science Center. There’s a reason this is the fourth-largest visitor destination in the U.S.

  • 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
    National Optometry Hall of Fame inductions. Have hors d’oeuvres with the luminaries of the optometric profession as Optometry Cares®—The AOA Foundation inducts the Class of 2015 into the National Optometry Hall of Fame.

  • 8:00 – 11:00 p.m.*
    Varilux® Optometry Student Bowl™ XXIV and reception. There’s no missing the high-speed, high-stakes test of optometric knowledge that is the student bowl. Come enjoy the energy and good-spirited collegiate rivalries as you cheer on your alma mater for the coveted crystal trophy.

    Be sure to stick around as Optometry Cares—The AOA Foundation, The Vision Council, American Optometric Student Association and Essilor of America look to make history with their Guinness World Record™ attempt. Don sunglass and help break the Guinness World Record for ‘most people wearing sunglasses in the dark’ to raise awareness for the importance of eye and vision care.
