Optometry's Meeting® is less than two weeks away and if you haven't started planning for all that your profession's premier conference has to offer, now's as good a time as any. Here's a quick look at how AOA member doctors can maximize their meeting schedule while still enjoying the many family-friendly destinations and activities that St. Louis affords.

Thursday, June 20

  • 8-9 a.m. - Choose from one of three free breakfast symposia-or coffee.
Enjoy breakfast courtesy of industry supporters and listen to promotional presentations, ranging from Shire's "CONNECTiiNG THE DOTS" and Alcon Vision Care's "Patient Purchase Behavior Trends to Enhance Practice Outcomes" to Novartis Pharmaceuticals' "Updates in the Management of Ocular Allergies." Or, perhaps consider joining the EyePromise Coffee Break from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

  • 9-10 a.m. - Attend AOA House of Delegates.
Optometry's preeminent assembly of leaders and decision-makers, the House of Delegates is where the profession's advocates, representatives and veritable movers and shakers decide on AOA business matters. Arrive early to witness the traditional fanfare of the opening flag ceremony and the optometric oath, and watch your state delegation in action as they advance optometry's priorities in the AOA Congress.

  • 10 a.m. to noon - Attend continuing education.
Consult the 2019 Education Grids to find in-depth, unique and new educational programming to keep your practice up-to-date on the latest practice management, technological and clinical advances enveloping optometry. Perhaps you'd like to learn how to get paid for diagnostic tests (see the June 2019 edition of AOA Focus) or earn COPE-approved credit for dry eye disease, or adapt your practice for sports and performance vision with the "AOA CLCS & AOA SVC Join Forces - Simple Strategies to Elevate Your Patient's Sports Performance."

  • Noon-1 p.m. - Choose among several free lunch symposia.
Enjoy lunch courtesy of industry supporters and listen to promotional presentations, including Allergan's "Insights in Dry Eye Management," Johnson & Johnson Vision's "The Contact Lens That Knows LightTM: ACUVUE® OASYS with TransitionsTM Light Intelligent TechnologyTM," Alcon Vision Care's "Precision & Performance: A New Frontier in Contact Lenses," and Essilor's "The Wow Factor: Delivered by Varilux."

  • Noon-1 p.m. - Attend AOA+ Leadership Link.
AOA+ Leadership Link is designed to give students and new doctors an exclusive opportunity to network, ask questions and interact with doctors in a constructive setting. Wholly informal, these one-hour sessions (three in total at Optometry's Meeting) are still looking for doctors of optometry as mentors. Click here for more information.

  • 1-3 p.m. - Explore St. Louis with your family.
St. Louis has plenty of family-oriented activities for kids of all ages to enjoy. Whether it's our nationally renowned Saint Louis Zoo, the feat of engineering that is the Gateway Arch, the Saint Louis Science Center for inquisitive young minds or City Museum for the adventurous, the Gateway to the West has something for everyone-all within a short distance from America's Center. The same goes for doctors attending without their families, including brewery tours, museums and more.

  • 3-5 p.m. - Visit the Exhibit Hall.
Join the AOA Board of Trustees at 3 p.m. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and be among the first attendees into the Exhibit Hall. Don't miss this opportunity to engage 200 exhibitors and vendors, face to face, and find everyday solutions that can enhance your practice and assist in providing quality patient care.

NEW THIS YEAR: There are five COPE-approved CE courses offered in the Education Theater inside the Exhibit Hall, including "The Rapidly Changing Landscape of Refraction Technologies: How They Impact Your Practice and Where You Should Go From Here," 3:30-4:30 p.m., Thursday, and "Taking an Active Role in Keeping Your Patients Happy in Contact Lenses," 5:30-6:30 p.m., Thursday.

  • 5-7 p.m. - Dine at a quintessential St. Louis establishment.
In the heart of downtown St. Louis, America's Center is just a short cab ride away from some of St. Louis' most venerated eateries. Sure, you've heard of this town's love for toasted ravioli and cracker-thin pizza, but consider the famous Italian scene on The Hill, the barbecue boom at Midtown and The Grove, the nightlife in historic, 19th-century Soulard, or the vibrant and multicultural Delmar Loop.

  • 7-8 p.m. - Attend the National Optometry Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Enjoy hors d'oeuvres with luminaries of the optometric profession as Optometry Cares®—The AOA Foundation inducts the Class of 2019 into the National Optometry Hall of Fame. Sponsored by ZEISS, Allergan, Heidelberg Engineering, Review of Optometry, Arizona College of Optometry, Southern College of Optometry, SECO and COVD.

  • 8-11 p.m. - Cheer on your alma mater at the AOSA Optometry Student BowlTM XXVIII powered by Essilor.
This is one Optometry's Meeting you won't want to miss: The AOSA Optometry Student Bowl XXVIII powered by Essilor is a high-speed, high-stakes test of optometric knowledge where each school and college of optometry dons their colors-and often their outlandish costumes-to cheer on their alma mater for the coveted crystal trophy.
