2025 code changes: What doctors of optometry need to know
November 13, 2024
Learn about key changes that will take effect Jan. 1, 2025.
Written by the AOA’s Coding & Reimbursement Committee.
It is critical for all doctors to stay up to date on coding changes. For 2025, important changes were made to codes reported by doctors of optometry. Review the information below, make sure your coding resources are up to date and review the AOA’s coding education on EyeLearn.
A full update on 2025 code changes will be available on EyeLearn in December.
Key code changes
Effective Jan. 1, 2025:
- CPT codes 92132, 92133 and 92134 have been revised.
- Codes 92132 and 92133 have been revised to add optical coherence tomography (OCT) to the descriptor.
- 92132, 92133 and 92134 and instructions for reporting have been updated to stay current with how practices are evolving.
- A new code has been created to report computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging of the posterior segment of the eye (retina) that includes OCT angiography (OCT-A).
- 92137 was established to describe computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging of the retina, including OCT angiography. This code requires both traditional OCT of the retina and OCT-A to be performed, interpreted with report on the same day.
Future of telemedicine reporting
CPT also made changes to telemedicine coding. Congress must act before the year’s end to extend Medicare’s flexibility for coverage of telehealth services, so implementation is still unknown. Be sure to review the upcoming webinar on EyeLearn regarding 2025 coding changes in December to stay up to date.
