CMS’ Physician Compare extension—preview data now

Doctors have less than two weeks left to preview their 2014 quality measures data before the information becomes publicly available as part of the Physician Compare Initiative later this year.

This is the only time that doctors' 2014 quality measures data can be previewed before it is posted online.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) extended the Physician Compare preview period to Nov. 16, 2015, granting additional time to allow individuals and group practices to see how their quality measures data will appear on the website. The original, 30-day preview period began Oct. 5, 2015.

Created by the Affordable Care Act to provide consumers with a searchable database that lists Medicare physicians and their quality measures performance, the Physician Compare website lists general information about doctors/group practices alongside their quality program participation indicators, such as:

The Physician Compare site first launched in December 2010 with the intention of providing information to help consumers make an informed decision about their health care, while also encouraging doctors' strong performance on quality measures. CMS intends to phase in additional quality measures on Physician Compare in the next several years.

The AOA has repeatedly raised concerns with CMS regarding the accuracy and value of some of the information provided on the website and is continuing to work with CMS to ensure that the information available is reliable. Based on recent concerns raised by the AOA and other provider organizations, CMS has reconsidered adding certain pieces of information to the website.
