Tamara Petrosyan, O.D., Young Optometrist of the Year Award

Tamara Petrosyan accepts awardTamara Petrosyan, O.D., of New Jersey, is the 2015 AOA Young Optometrist of the Year. Dr. Petrosyan graduated with honors from State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry in 2009 and completed a residency in low vision, vision rehabilitation, and ocular disease at the Northport VA Medical Center.

From 2012 to 2014, Dr. Petrosyan worked at Refuah Health Center in New Valley, New York, doing pediatric primary care exams and vision therapy. In 2013, while at the Refuah Health Center, Dr. Petrosyan developed and helped implement a new pediatric vision screening battery for the pediatric nurses and physicians to be used in the pediatric department.

She joined the faculty of her alma mater in 2011 as an assistant clinical professor. At SUNY Optometry, Dr. Petrosyan is actively involved with the professional development of her students, participating in programs such as Dining with Doctors, which helps students get to know the SUNY Optometry faculty, and the student-doctor mentorship program.

Dr. Petrosyan is an active member of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians (NJSOP). In 2013, Dr. Petrosyan was appointed as the New Jersey state liaison for the InfantSEE® program. She continuously advocates the InfantSEE program to New Jersey optometrists. That same year, Dr. Petrosyan was appointed as a member of the NJSOP Board of Directors.

In 2014, she was appointed as the head of the NJSOP's Young OD Taskforce, which helps to engage young NJSOP-member doctors and helps them become more connected to the NJSOP and the AOA, showing them the value in membership.
