Pierce files for re-election as AOA trustee

Samuel D. Pierce, O.D., has filed for re-election to the American Optometric Association Board of Trustees.

A board member for the past four years, Dr. Pierce serves as a member of the Finance Committee, and Constitution and Bylaws Committee. He is the board liaison to the Affiliate Relations and Membership Group, Contact Lens and Cornea Section, and the Workforce Study Expert Panel Project Team. He also serves as liaison to affiliate associations in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin, in addition to the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University, Illinois College of Optometry and Indiana University School of Optometry.

Originally elected to the board in 2009, Dr. Pierce initially served as a liaison trustee to the Clinical and Practice Advancement Group Executive Committee, Commission on Ophthalmic Standards, Ethics and Values Committee, Health Promotions Committee, Practice Advancement Committee, and Vision Rehabilitation Section. 

He has been a volunteer member of the Communications Advisory Group, Professional Relations Committee, Nominating Committee and Student and New Graduate Committee.

Dr. Pierce, of Trussville, Ala., the 2012 winner of the Optometrist of the Year Award from the Alabama Optometric Association (ALOA), is also a past president and a member of ALOA, the Southern Council of Optometry (SECO), and the American Public Health Association, as well as a past president of the Birmingham Area Optometric Association.

He has served as chair of the Disaster Preparedness Task Force and served on the ALOA Board of Directors, Executive Director Search Committee, Education Committee, Elections Committee, and Alabama Optometric Association PAC. He was also a trustee of the SECO Board of Trustees and served on the SECO Logistics Committee and Nominating Committee.

Dr. Pierce was chair of the VisionAmerica of Birmingham Advisory Board and served as director on the Eye Health Partners Board of Directors. He has also served as a clinical examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.

A graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry (UABSO), Dr. Pierce was past president of the UABSO Alumni Association where he was also awarded the UABSO 2012 Alumnus of the Year award.

He is an active volunteer in the Trussville community where he is in private practice at Trussville Vision Care.
