Samuel D. Pierce, O.D., was first elected to the American Optometric Association Board of Trustees in June 2009 and installed as Immediate Past President in St. Louis, Missouri at the 122nd Annual AOA Congress & 49th Annual AOSA Conference: Optometry's Meeting® in June, 2019.

In addition to his duties as Immediate Past President, Dr. Pierce serves as chair to the Personnel Committee and as a member of the Executive Committee. Dr. Pierce also serves as a liaison trustee to the Health Care Alliance for Patient Safety. His previous assignments include the Great Western Council of Optometry, Mountain West Council of Optometrists, North Central States Optometric Council, East/West, Southern Council of Optometrists, and the Universidad InterAmericana as well as AOA Advocacy Committee, CE Subcommittee, Meetings Center Committee, Sports and Performance Vision Committee, and VisionUSA Committee.  

Prior to his election to the Board, Dr. Pierce served the AOA by volunteering his time to the Communications Advisory Group, Professional Relations Committee, Nominating Committee and the Student and New Graduate Committee. He is also past president of the Alabama Optometric Association and served as a member of the SECO Board of Trustees.

Dr. Pierce attended Birmingham-Southern College and is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry (UABSO) and a past president of the UABSO Alumni Association. In 2010, Dr. Pierce received the UABSO 2010 Alumnus of the Year award and in 2012 he received the Alabama Optometric Association's Optometrist of the Year award.

Dr. Pierce has been in private practice in Trussville, Alabama for over 30 years.
