Tammy Than, O.D., Optometric Educator of the Year Award

Tammy Than accepts awardTammy Than, O.D., of Alabama, is the 2015 AOA Optometric Educator of the Year. Dr. Than is a graduate of the Southern College of Optometry and is now a professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry (UABSO).

Dr. Than has served an active role on several UABSO panels, including the UABSO Residency & Fellowship Advisory Committee, UABSO Continuing Education Advisory Committee, UABSO Curriculum Committee and the UABSO Admissions Committee. She also served as UABSO Associate Dean for Professional Studies and was elected UAB Faculty Senator.

Among her professional achievements, Dr. Than has authored numerous papers and has been involved in research including dry eye, aniseikonia, nicotine and pharmaceutical studies. She has won the American Optometric Student Association Teaching Award six times and maintains a close connection with her students, which was apparent when they planned a surprise celebration to honor her accomplishment of running a marathon in all 50 states.  

Dr. Than has actively served in the American Academy of Optometry.  She currently serves as the press conference chair and serves on the Communications Committee.  She also has served as an American Academy of Optometry faculty-student liaison and served as chair of the Lectures/Workshops Committee.  

An active member of the Alabama Optometric Association (ALOA), Dr. Than served as chair of the ALOA's Education Task Force from 2003 to 2006, as well as served on the ALOA Board of Directors from 2009 to 2012. She received the ALOA's Young Optometrist of the Year Award in 2005 and the Educator of the Year Award in 2014.
